Defector to North Korea

Much has been said about Jerry Wayne Parrish, a kid that was a good friend during my City High freshman & sophomore years in 1960 & 1961. Jerry lived on Stewart Ave one block over from the street that I grew up, Pringle St. in Henderson, KY.
When I first heard that Jerry had defected to the Communists North Korean's side, I was like everyone else that knew him, I was in complete shock & disbelief. I served honorably in the United States Marine Corps from 1964 to 1970. Most of the fellow Marines that I went through training with died as part of America's fighting forces in South Vietnam. Over one million American Soldiers/Marines have served duty in South Korea with only 4 Americans defecting to  North Korean side of the DMZ.
One cannot forgive, condone or excuse what Jerry Parrish did. This is the ultimate act of  cowardness. An out & out act of treason, the actions of a total coward and traitor, much akin tothe likes of Benedict Arnold.
Most Americans do not agree with the light sentence that was handed down to Charles Jenkins. The punishment was equivilent to a murderer being slapped on the wrist and released.

Best quote in 1963 senior yearbook, the Revue.
from Jerry Utley:

"A little learning is a dangerous thing. Jerry is being extremely careful to avoid danger".
